Samsung 860 EVO is the world’s best-selling SATA SSD. Specially designed for mainstream PCs and laptops, using V-NAND technology and a reliable controller with a streamlined algorithm, this drive is a very fast SSD for everyday tasks.
The EVO series uses 3-bit flash memory per cell (TLC), but it reserves 2.3% of the NAND capacity for background operations and caching. This helps offset the poor write performance of the TLC memory.
Samsung has equipped the 860 series SSD with a new MJX controller that supports low-power DDR4 memory, so it probably has a new built-in memory controller. Most likely, the company managed to create an MJX controller based on a smaller lithography, which ensures lower power consumption, cooler operation and lower production costs.
Samsung approves that its fourth-generation 64-layer V-NAND consumes 30% more power than its 48-layer predecessor. Samsung has taken a big step forward by lowering the input voltage from 3.3 V to just 2.5 Volts. It also allowed to reduce the data access speed to 500 microseconds, which is 1.5 times faster than in the previous generation.
The 860 Series supports hardware encryption using Opal TCG and Microsoft eDrive.
The 860 EVO has excellent endurance and reliability. If there weren’t a new 860 Pro that provides double endurance rating, the 860 EVO would become the market leader in solid state drives with 150 TB endurance for recording for every 250 GB of used capacity. SSDs are still covered by the standard five-year warranty.
