One of the key features of the Focus Plus Platinum line is standard dimensions (ATX – 139 x 149 x 86 mm). The unit is equipped with ATX Mainboard 20 + 4-pin and 4 + 4-pin composite connectors, which ensures compatibility with the maximum number of motherboards.
Seasonic warns customers about incorrect information on the packaging of some of their power supplies:
Some of our FOCUS PLUS Platinum products are being sold in a packaging box where the 80 PLUS® Efficiency rating in the specifications section is mistakenly printed as 80 PLUS® Gold. We have already taken measures to correct this but we could not recall all the products that had this mistake.
To correctly identify the efficiency level of Seasonic power supplies, we suggest customers to check the 80 PLUS® label on the front cover of the box.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

CABLE-FREE CONNECTION DESIGN
Seasonic’s engineers have implemented a new design feature, where instead of cables; the back panel and the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) are connected by a copper plate. This breakthrough solution not only lowers the chance of production errors during manual insertion but it also improves output power quality.
HYBRID SILENT FAN CONTROL
The industry’s first, Seasonic patented, advanced three-phased thermal control achieves optimal between silence and cooling. This Hybrid Silent Fan Control functions in three operational stages: Fanless Mode, Silent Mode, and Cooling Mode.
- Reduced noise without increase in temperature;
- Extended fan life due to the reduced number of fan rotations;
- Optimized heat dissipation at all times;
- Unsurpassed silent performance in Fanless Mode.
Additionally, there is a switch at the back of the power supply which allows users to customize their cooling needs by selecting between the Seasonic S2FC (fan control without Fanless Mode) and the S3FC (fan control including Fanless Mode).
THE FAN CONTROL BUTTON
The fan control button can be found on the back of the back of the FOCUS PLUS power supply, next to the power switch. The image here illustrates how to select different fan control modes to suit your need.
DO NOT press the button if you wish to include the Fanless Mode, which means the fan in the power supply will not spin when the power supply is under light loads. Press the button if you wish to have the fan spin at all times, even at lower loads.
FLUID DYNAMIC FAN BEARING
High performance Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fans are designed to take advantage of the impact absorbance effects of oil. They are extremely reliable and generate considerably less operating noise and heat than ball bearing fans. The lubrication of the bearing surface reduces friction and vibration and therefore lowers overall power consumption. Due to the effortless, quieter rotations and its robust construction, this reliable fan technology also greatly increases the lifespan of the fan.
HOW IT WORKS
When the fan shaft rotates, high pressure oil drifts along the grooves of the bearing sleeve to generate a thin layer of lubrication between the bearing faces. As the speed increases, so does dynamic oil pressure and the shaft is lifted from the bearing to create smooth, effortless rotations. The herringbone shape of the groves helps to efficiently channel the lubricant and avert leakage.
Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 650 Testing
The power supply unit endured a cross-load without any problems, and also showed itself perfectly in work with a noticeable “overload” (50-100 W). The devices from Seasonic show a very high level of efficiency: the average value significantly exceeds 90%, the maximum reaches 93%, which exceeds the requirements of the standard specs.
Efficiency at different load levels
The stabilization system copes with its tasks without any fails.
Voltage on lines 3.3 / 5/12 V At different load levels.
The fan starts at a load of about 350 W at ~ 500 rpm, the rate increases with increasing of load to ~ 1020 rpm.
Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 650. Fan speed at different load levels (rpm)
At 350 W, the power supply unit operates conditionally silently. With increasing load, a barely noticeable “hiss” appears, which can be heard only from close range.

Test results were taken from the site overclockers.ru
Buyers were satisfied with the noiselessness of the power supply, its durability, reliability and its protection from power outages and short circuits. Voltage on lines 3.3, 5.12 V – Gorgeous! The size of the power supply is also a big plus – it is smaller than many ATX power supplies and is well suited to compact assemblies that do not require SFX units.
As disadvantages, some users pointed to uncomfortable cables that they found stiff and difficult to bend. For example, when connecting to the power connector of the motherboard on the power supply, it is necessary to twist the wires spiral to get into the corresponding connectors. The buyers were also upset by the absence of the latches-clips on the 4 + 4 connector and it was inconvenient to connect the two 4-pin wires, they were run apart. When you would like to buy this power supply unit you should think about buying braided extensions at least for the processor power cable.
By cons, Yandex.Market users also attributed inadequate prices for this power supply in Russian online stores.
A fine replacement for the G-series

Model: Focus+ Gold Size: 650W
This is an excellent power supply for a system with one powerful graphics card or two mid-range cards. A lighter system would be better-served by a version of same with lower wattage.
The cable layout is like so:
1 x 24-pin motherboard (sheathed)
1 x 4/8-pin CPU (sheathed)
2 x 6/8-pin PCIe (sheathed)
2 x 4 SATA (not sheathed)
1 x 3 molex (not sheathed)
1 x floppy (not sheathed)
This is a fully modular power supply. Modularity means that some or all cables are attached separately so you can pick and choose what you need. This feature becomes more important as wattage goes up so you won’t obstruct airflow with unused cables. The cable attachment mechanism is nice and chunky; better than flat inserts that put all four wires in line.
Fifteen years ago, most power supplies were about 70% efficient: for a 100W load, they’d pull about 140W from the wall. Not anymore. We now have six major PSU ratings: 80 Plus and 80 Plus Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium. These correspond to half-load efficiencies of 80%, 85%, 88%, 90%, 92%, and 94%. Efficiencies at 1/5 and 4/5 load are about 4% less than half-load. This unit is Gold-rated, and according to PCPer, meets the 90% efficiency requirement for that certification.
There isn’t a strong economic argument for efficiency. Relative to a Bronze PSU, the FOCUS saves about $5 a year for a 24/7/365 100W load in most parts of the country. More noticeable is the acoustic difference. Every watt that isn’t going into the system needs to be vented from the PSU. Less efficient units require a bigger or faster fan, which makes more noise. The fan in this one doesn’t even turn on until a 200W draw and doesn’t begin to ramp up until 400W. For the overwhelming majority of systems the overwhelming majority of the time, it’ll be completely inaudible.
I haven’t commented on ripple and other low-level power characteristics, partly because they’re exemplary (par for the course for Seasonic), but also because they’re irrelevant. Short of a no-brand $15 tin-box special, just about every PSU on a retail shelf is good enough for a modern system if the wattage is adequate. Computers require less power than they ever have (outside of gaming and overclocking) and motherboard power regulation is better than ever. This FOCUS has no bad behaviors under load, but you could put a $30 Corsair in your system with nary a difference.
This is an excellent PSU for a system with a serious graphics card, and where noise performance and efficiency are at a premium. It’s also rather well-priced like the G-series that preceded it. I’ve had at least four Seasonic power supplies. None have failed. None have had coil whine or strange fan behaviors that I’ve seen even on high-end models from other brands.
While Seasonic is an OEM for other manufacturers, I believe their own products represent the best they can do. As above, I don’t think this level of performance is strictly necessary, but if you’re willing to pay for it, you could hardly pick a better PSU. Just run your system by PCPartpicker’s excellent power calculator before settling on a wattage.
Review from Amazon Customer
Very good but problems in the long run.

Model: 80 + GoldSize: 650W
Extremely silent, no need for a fanless one in my case and the fan barely gathers dust. Only bothersome thing is that the cable that goes into the motherboard is quite short thus I had to buy an extension. Very good so far, it has been almost a year.
Edit July 2016: I encountered a problem that seems to be kinda common around these seasonic’s, something will go wrong and it wont turn on anymore unless you reset it by switching the power off and then wait a while and try again. Too bad I cant RMA because im not in the country anymore
