Review: Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM Lüfter 120mm [NF-A12x15 PWM]

Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM Lüfter 120mm [NF-A12x15 PWM] is a 120mm fan from a leading Austrian manufacturer of cooling systems, whose products are characterized by increased efficiency, quality and durability, but at the same time have a slightly higher price than their competitors. The main advantages of the NF-A12x15 PWM fan are a small thickness, quiet operation and a six-year warranty from the manufacturer.

Compared to other 120mm fans with a thickness of 15mm, the Noctua NF-A12x15 has the highest maximum static pressure – 1.53mm H2O – and the highest maximum airflow value – 55 Cubic Feet per Minute. A big advantage is the rich package bundle for any conceivable and inconceivable using: Y-shaped splitter, extension cord and extension cord with step-down resistor, anti-vibration nails.

Review of Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM Lüfter 120mm [NF-A12x15 PWM]

Featuring advanced aerodynamic design measures such as Flow Acceleration Channels and Noctua’s AAO frame, the NF-A12x15 is a highly optimised, premium quality quiet fan in size 120x15mm. Its 15mm slim design makes the NF-A12x15 ideal for space-restricted applications such as low-profile CPU coolers or HTPC cases. The PWM version sports Noctua’s custom-designed NE-FD1 IC for fully automatic speed control via 4-pin fan headers and comes with a Low-Noise Adaptor to reduce the maximum speed during PWM control from 1850 to 1400rpm. Its superb running smoothness, reference-class SSO2 bearing and Noctua’s trusted premium quality make it an elite choice for the highest demands.

Main Featrures

  • Premium quiet slim fan, 120x120x15 mm, 12V, 4-pin PWM, max. 1850 RPM, max. 23.9 dB(A), >150,000 h MTTF
  • Award-winning A-series design with Flow Acceleration Channels and Advanced Acoustic Optimisation frame for superior quiet cooling performance
  • 120x15mm slim design ideal for low-profile CPU coolers, HTPCs, ITX builds, space-restricted applications etc.
  • 4-pin PWM version for automatic speed control via 4-pin PWM fan headers, 1850rpm maximum speed (1400rpm with supplied Low-Noise Adaptor)
  • Includes anti-vibration mounts, fan screws, extension cable and y-cable for running two PWM fans on the same header

15mm slim design

Having a thickness of only 15mm, the NF-A12x15 is much slimmer than standard 120x25mm fans. This makes it ideal for typical slim fan applications such as low-profile CPU coolers as well as for freeing up space by replacing standard 120x25mm fans on tower coolers, radiators or in PC cases.

Metal-reinforced motor hub

With many larger-diameter slim fan designs, the shorter axis and bearing lead to a reduced running stability and lifespan. The NF-A12x15 uses a metal-reinforced motor hub, a measure typically found in high-speed industrial fans, in order to guarantee Noctua’s signature stability and longevity.

Flow Acceleration Channels

The NF-A12x15 impeller features suction side Flow Acceleration Channels. By speeding up the airflow at the crucial outer blade regions, this measure reduces suction side flow separation and thus leads to better efficiency and lower vortex noise.

AAO frame

Noctua’s AAO (Advanced Acoustic Optimisation) frames feature integrated anti-vibration pads as well as Noctua’s proprietary Stepped Inlet Design and Inner Surface Microstructures, both of which further refine the fan’s performance/noise efficiency.

Stepped Inlet Design

Noctua’s Stepped Inlet Design adds turbulence to the influx in order to facilitate the transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, which reduces tonal intake noise, improves flow attachment and increases suction capacity, especially in space-restricted environments.

Inner Surface Microstructures

With the tips of the fan blades ploughing through the boundary layer created by the Inner Surface Microstructures, flow separation from the suction side of the blades is significantly suppressed, which results in reduced blade passing noise and improved airflow and pressure efficiency.

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads made from extra-soft silicone minimise the transmission of minute vibrations while maintaining full compatibility with all standard mounting systems and fan clips used on heatsinks.

Custom-designed PWM IC with SCD

Supporting fully automatic PWM speed control, the fan uses Noctua’s custom-designed NE-FD1 PWM IC that integrates Smooth Commutation Drive (SCD) technology. By providing smoother torque impulses, SCD suppresses PWM switching noises and thus makes the fan quieter at low speeds.

Low-Noise Adaptor

The NF-A12x15 PWM is supplied with a (L.N.A.) that reduces the maximum fan speed from 1850 to 1400rpm. The L.N.A. can be used either to run the fan at a fixed speed of 1400rpm or to cap the maximum speed when using automatic PWM control.

Extensive cabling options

The fan’s short 20cm primary cable minimises cable clutter in typical applications while the supplied 30cm extension provides extended reach when necessary. Both cables are fully sleeved and a 4-pin y-cable allows the connection of a second fan to the same PWM fan header for automatic control.

SSO2 bearing

The NF-A12x15 features the further optimised second generation of Noctua’s renowned, time-tested SSO bearing. With SSO2, the rear magnet is placed closer to the axis to provide even better stabilisation, precision and durability.

Test results

Tests have shown that the fan has high efficiency with low noise levels. The fan was used in conjunction with processors Core i7-6950X, Core i7-7700K. Measured temperature processors, hard drives and inside the system case.

Customer Reviews

According to buyer reviews, the Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM Lüfter 120mm [NF-A12x15 PWM] is one of the thinnest and quietest 120 mm fans that can outperform many 25mm fans.

As the main advantages of the fan was noted: size 15 mm, rich equipment, low noise, magnetic levitation.

As disadvantages, buyers noted in their reviews, above all, the high price, as well as the noise that appears at a near-maximum RPM.

The fan will be an excellent solution for those who have standard 25mm coolers that do not fit in the case and do not fit into the system unit due to the installed water cooling system.

This item for those who understand why he takes this fan. If you have little space, such as when installing a Raijintek Morpheus II radiator on a video card or when building a compact system in a Cougar QBX case, then these fans are practically the best choice.

Quiet thin and powerful
May 1, 2018 [Verified Purchase]

Five out of five. I have 4 of them in RVZ03 case. 3 of them are bought individually and 1 is with the NH-L12S.

One of them apparently was restocked. Screw holes were a bit loose and missing some plastic wraps but that doesn’t affect the fan itself from functioning properly.

Below 1000RPM they are almost silent. At around 1500RPM is the sweetspot for this fan, it is audible but manage to move a lot of air through. The fan max out at 1800RPM and the noise is very audible, but not obtrusive. I don’t know how Noctua did it but the airflow sound is very natural and not annoying to my ears. Plus, it is moving massive amount of air into my ITX case.

Noctua NF-A12-x15 vs Cooler Master xtraflow 15mm 120mm fan

For anyone curious to how this new Noctua slim fan performs. Not worth your time.

Test done on 240 rad with 2 fans. In Unigine on ultra settings with a 980ti
In a 75f room temp the noctua fans hit 63C
Again in a 75f room temp the coolermaster fans hit 58C with same test conditions

Negative customer feedback from Amazon, which compared the Noctua fan with CoolerMaster xtraflow and was disappointed with the first.
