The current generation of 3D NAND offers a noticeably higher storage density and has a lower cost than planar memory, and due to the increased cell size, it can provide a good level of performance and reliability.
Intel’s SSD uses a new 64-layer Intel memory with three-bit cells, which replaces the planar three-bit memory SK Hynix.
In 2017, Intel was the first to release a solid-state drive based on a new 64-layer TLC 3D NAND.
Intel SSD 545s 2.5Zoll SATA TLC 256GB [SSDSC2KW256G8X1] is the third model from Intel, based on the controller of the manufacturer Silicon Motion. However, in the SSD 540s a newer chip SM2259 is used, which is exclusive for Intel SSDs so far. The architecture in the new version of the controller has not changed – it is based on a 32-bit RISC processor and uses four channels to interact with the flash memory array. But thanks to increasing clock frequency, the SM2259 is capable of delivering about 10 percent better performance in random operations. In addition, a new chip has added error correction when processing data inside the controller, which increases the reliability of the platforms built on it.
The software part of the Intel SSD 545s is well debugged and optimized; the Direct-to-TLC function works as it should; and the novelty can compete with the best products on TLC-memory, for example with Samsung 850 EVO.

Review of Intel SSD 545s 2.5Zoll SATA TLC 256GB [SSDSC2KW256G8X1]
Features and Benefits
Replace your HDD with an Intel® SSD 545s Series and accelerate your computer performance immediately. With performance faster than an HDD, you’ll see quicker boot-ups, more responsive applications, and faster file transfers for less waiting and more doing.
Intel is a leader in quality and reliability. Every Intel® SSD is subject to rigorous testing standards above and beyond the standard quality requirements. The Intel SSD 545s Series supports AES 256-bit self-encryption to protect your data and is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
The standard 2.5-inch form factor fits easily into most PCs. With Intel® Data Migration Software, copying data from your old drive to the SSD is simple.
The Intel SSD 545s Series features 64-layer Intel® 3D NAND technology that enables higher drive capacities and delivers a cost-effective replacement for traditional HDDs.
The Intel SSD 545s 2.5Zoll SATA TLC 256GB drive [SSDSC2KW256G8X1] is the cheapest 2.5 ”SSD available at the computeruniverse online store.
The SSD uses a new SM2259 chip with increased performance; firmware significantly optimized and received support for Direct-to-TLC; and instead of the slow planar TLC NAND from SK Hynix, company used its our own Intel 64-layer TLC 3D NAND with an architecture that is able to meet the demands of the modern SSD standarts.
The Intel SSD 545s SLC cache is static, and its volume is about 1.5 GB for every 128 GB of storage capacity. So, the 512-gigabyte version of this SSD can record at high speed, limited only by the bandwidth of the SATA interface, up to 6 GB of data. Then performance drops, but only slightly.
The upper surface of the SSD case received a deep rim along the contour, and its lower part was made of another alloy. The body of the drive is made of metal, which is good for dissipation of heat. In addition, inside, heat-conducting pads are installed on the controllers and microcircuits. Even at maximum load, the temperature of the drive does not exceed 50 degrees.
To work with the drive, you can use the functional utility SSD Toolbox from Intel. The program allows you to get detailed information about the state of the drive and has a whole set of additional tools for tuning and optimizing the disk (such as diagnostic scanning, Secure Erase – permanently deleting data, System Tuner tool).
Comparative tests with a mixed load involved such analogues as ADATA Ultimate SU900 512 GB; Crucial MX300 525 GB; Intel SSD 540s 480 GB; Kingston HyperX Savage 480 GB; Transcend SSD230 512 GB; Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB; Western Digital Blue SSD 500 GB
In these tests Intel SSD loses some points compared to the leader of solid-state drives – Samsung 850 EVO.
Intel SSD 545s is not so powerful in an arbitrary record, but nevertheless the new fast three-dimensional memory allows to achieve significantly better results in comparison with drives on a planar TLC NAND.
Below are the results of the most simple drive tests from Yandex.Market buyers.
Program AS SSD Benchmark. IDE speed
Program AS SSD Benchmark. AHCI speed
CrystalDiskMark program. AHCI speed
Testing with popular applications World of Warcraft, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Battlefield 3, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects
Intel SSD 545s for some reason is weak only in Adobe Photoshop. It performs all other test scenarios at a speed close to that of Western Digital Blue. This suggests that in terms of performance, the drive is ideal for average personal computers.
Despite the using of TLC memory in SSD, customers note its stability, reliability and durability. In addition to this, as noted by buyers, the disc is very fast, absolutely silent and cold in most operations. In terms of price-quality ratio, among drives with a capacity of 256 Gb, the disk probably has no equal. On computeruniverse, this is the cheapest 2.5 “drive in its category. In addition, it is not no name manufacturer or Intenso with bad reputation, it is Intel – a company that has established itself in the market as a reliable manufacturer of computer electronics.

I was having boot problems and wondered if my old Corsair Force 128GB SSD was starting to fail? It was installed in 2012, 6 years ago. I wanted to go with a brand that I could trust, so Intel it was. I used Intel’s program for migrating my data from my Corsair SSD to this new Intel drive. It was a breeze. This SSD from Intel works just as well as my old Corsair drive. The nice thing is that I now have a lot more space, allowing me to install my Office, Adobe, Photo, and other programs on my native drive, which speeds everything up. I gave less for this Intel drive than what I gave for that Corsair drive 6 years ago. The only difference that I noticed was this Intel drive was slimmer than my Corsair (7 vs 9 mm) and while my Corsair came with a drive bay adapter, the Intel did not. Get an adapter if you don’t have one already. I use mine in a desktop. Your laptop may already be set up to accept this size of drive.

Every once in a while this drive will completely lock my PC, utilizaion goes to 100% and throughput goes to zero.
Bought Intel since I was coming from a previous Intel SSD which ran perfect in the exact same PC, same image, etc… I’ll be returning this one.
