Review: Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” Boxed Socket 1151-v2 [BX80684I58400]

The Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” Boxed Sockel 1151-v2 [BX80684I58400] processor is positioned as a reasonable solution for demanding and calculating consumers. It belongs to the average price segment and is a kind of response to the emergence of new processors from rival AMD Ryzen.

In contrast to the Intel Core i5-7400, the Intel Core i5-8400 processor has got two additional cores. The advantages of the new model are also significant improvements in energy consumption and heat dissipation.

Owners of LGA1151 boards wishing to upgrade to the Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” will be forced to purchase new boards with LGA1151v2, which are mostly simple rebranding. In addition, users may not be satisfied with the lack of overclocking capability in the processor, but is this such a big problem?

You can buy Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” 6 core (Hexa Core) CPU with 2.80 GHz, Boxed with heatsink for the price 221,90 . Don’t forget to use discount coupon on computeruniverse.netFWNNROU (How to use it?).

Review of Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” 6 core (Hexa Core) CPU with 2.80 GHz, Boxed with heatsink

The Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” TRAY Sockel 1151-v2 is a high-performance processor complete with a boxed cooler. The chip is based on the architecture of Coffee Lake, thanks to which it was able to increase productivity while maintaining optimal power consumption and heat dissipation. The processor has six cores and supports six threads; it is equipped with 9 MB third-level cache. The processor can be used in conjunction with the fourth generation DDR4 RAM up to 64 GB and up to 2666 MHz. The processor is equipped with Intel HD Graphics 630 video chip, which uses memory for storing information and performs well simple graphics tasks. Processor socket – LGA 1151-v2 – is not compatible with the motherboard of the first version.

Among the main advantages of the processor: low power consumption (comparable to the Core i7-7740X) and moderate heat.

The six cores of Coffee Lake correspond to the four cores of the Core i7-7700K with Hyper Threading operating at a higher frequency, and the cost of the new Intel processor is almost two times cheaper.

The Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” Boxed Sockel 1151-v2 processor is not suitable for overclocking and the only place for experiments is the frequency potential of the memory. For overlocker needs, the company has released a separate series of processors with unlocked multipliers – models with the ending “K”.

Testing of Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” 6 core (Hexa Core) CPU with 2.80 GHz, Boxed with heatsink

According to the test results in benchmarks, it becomes clear that Intel’s six-core lags slightly behind AMD’s younger six-core only in the “creative” Productivity scenario, while in other cases the advantage remains with Intel’s new product. In two cases out of three, the six-core novelty turns out to be worse than the higher-frequency Core i5-7600K.

In the Futuremark 3DMark Time Spy, the new Core i5-8400 provides almost the same result as the Ryzen 5 1600, but the six-core Coffee Lake is slightly cheaper.

In general, the Core i5-8400 performs its tasks well in resource-intensive applications. The new Intel shows itself better when working with images and video, but computing tasks and rendering remain the environments where the six-core Ryzen 5 is still very good.

The processor showed itself perfectly in new games, ensuring a high level of FPS and no drawdowns. There is no insurmountable difference between the results of Core i5 and Core i7, and we can say that the power of Coffee Lake is average enough for full-fledged game assemblies. The average difference in the frame rate, which is given by the younger 6-core Core i5-8400 and older Kaby Lake, Core i7-7700K, does not exceed 5 percent.

The Intel Core i5-8400 “Coffee Lake” Boxed Sockel 1151-v2 [BX80684I58400] is a six-core processor with a fairly conservative heat dissipation of 65 watts. In idle state, Coffee Lake processors are more economical than all other modern alternatives. When rendering, the six-core Core i5-8400 processor is similar in consumption to the quad-core Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 1500X. And when you turn on MultiCore Enhancements, the consumption of the system with the Core i5-8400 noticeably jumps. And finally, when working in energy-intensive vector programs of high capacity, the consumption of six-core Coffee Lake is the highest of all.

Customer reviews

The advantages of the processor that customers described in their reviews:

  • Good budget solution for medium gaming systems. In games, it shows itself better than the old Core i7. With a good video card (gtx 1060 and better) pulls all the games on ultra settings;
  • A fast processor with six cores and six threads (in some AIDA tests, the 8400 breaks out almost to the top, second only to server solutions);
  • Acceptable heat dissipation (however, with an inexpensive tower cooler, the temperature at the peak can reach 83 degrees);

The disadvantages:

  • Will not work with motherboard of the first version 1151;
  • Overpriced due to the high demand for processors of this line (A noticeable difference in price from the recommended one);
  • Overpriced motherboards for these processors;
  • Some buyers have noticed jumps in temperature on the core, however, compared with the i7-7700k processors, they are much lower.
  • To work under load box cooler, of course it will not be enough. Some buyers used CBO and proprietary thermal grease to cool the processor (such as NZXT Kraken M22, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease).

Just died 237 days after purchase.

I’ve been plagued with Windows 10 blue screen errors that grew in frequency over the last couple of weeks. It’s almost always “WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR”. Now I cannot even boot into Windows without almost immediately getting a blue screen. I’ve tried new RAM, so that is ruled out. I tried a new SSD, no dice. I took out my GPU and ran from on-board graphics, no dice.

I unplugged everything required for the PC to run. I didn’t even have a HDD or SSD installed. I popped in my Windows 10 USB installer, annnnnd blue screen. WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. I swapped in a friend’s CPU to test my motherboard and make absolutely certain there was nothing wrong with it, and everything booted up and worked flawlessly.

We put the CPU into his motherboard, blue screen. WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. The CPU is completely dead. It was never overclocked (it obviously can’t be since it’s non-K). It was definitely properly cooled for all 237 days that it was installed. It was never overheated or even used for gaming. At worst it was used for a design software that recommends a 3rd gen quad core.

This is a well taken care of machine, and the CPU completely gave up on me for no reason at all.
